Gravity Opens In First Place At Box Office

7 Oct

Gravity, the science-fiction astronaut film starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, has topped the American box office in its opening weekend. It grossed over $55 million, more than double that of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2, which entered its second weekend on October 4th.

The film, which is about a disaster scenario that leaves Bullock and Clooney floating in space, has been lauded for its terrific use of 3D and high levels of tension. It was directed by Alfonso Cuarón, who also directed 2006’s Children of Men, starring Clive Owen and Michael Caine.

Perhaps the most exciting part of this story is that it involves George Clooney; he’s been critically lauded for years, but his films tend to do poorly at the box office. Perhaps this is due to Clooney’s tendency to be picky with his roles, choosing smaller movies like Up in the Air and The Descendants.

Sandra Bullock, on the other hand, is no stranger to high ticket sales, nor has she been a stranger to the Academy. However, unlike Clooney, Bullock tends to diversify her roles. The Heat and The Proposal aren’t exactly Fruitvale Station, but her name still tends to be more associated with her serious roles. Only time with tell if gravity brings Gravity’s opening weekend figures back to Earth.

Sorry. Here’s a trailer.
